It’s hard to believe that I’ve already worked a full month. As you can imagine, June was quite a whirlwind. Among my many responsibilities, I met our current partners, welcomed three new people into the program, began to introduce myself to members of the COPE community, and waded through the bureaucracy of the prison system to set up my first interviews.

A great deal of love went into COPE’s most recent graduation and potluck. In preparation for it being in our backyard, the grass was freshly cut, the garden was nicely tended, and the weeds were painfully pulled from the cracks in the sidewalk. What is more, we cleaned off the outside furniture and arranged to use additional chairs and tables from Immanuel Lutheran Church

While visiting Los Angeles thirty years ago, one of our partners had the opportunity to see “A Chorus Line” at the Schubert Theatre. In the midst of a job search, she closely identified with the production about seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for a job—a spot on the chorus line. She was mesmerized by the theme of the musical and the lyrics of “I Hope I Get it,” which include, “I really need this job. Please God, I need this job. I’ve got to get this job.”

On August 27th, three staff members at Preferred Family Healthcare asked me if I was there for residential drug rehabilitation. With each question, I was humbled and reminded that I very well could be an awaiting client. Each time, I replied that I was accompanying an friend. I was there to admit one of our partners. Within a week’s time, another partner was admitted into the same 21-day program.

Not only does Project COPE work with people who have been incarcerated, but we hire ex-offenders as well. We have found that the organization is enriched and strengthened by people who have experienced life in prison and a successful transition back into the community. In fact, we partner with AARP, who provides part-time volunteers for our office and is grateful for a worksite that will accept formerly incarcerated individuals. It was through AARP that we first met Mary.
