After watching a partner struggle for five months to find a job, I called in a favor. A member of another team had “connections” with the CEO of a local agency. This team member advocated on behalf of our partner and was able to get him an interview.

On July 10th, more than 50 members of the COPE community braved “heat advisory” weather to attend our most recent Potluck/Graduation. Our large group overflowed the pavilion just as our food overflowed the two allotted tables. As a special treat, a Board member fired up the grill and prepared beef hotdogs. Among the most popular items were the cold beverages that our new team, House of Harvest, wisely brought.

On June 4th, 40 golfers gathered at Normandie Golf Course for Project COPE’s 7th Annual Golf Tournament. While St. Louis was in the midst of a Heat Advisory, the golfers did not complain; they continued to play, remained hydrated, and expressed gratitude for the occasional cool breeze.

The mass majority of our partners are surprised by the difficulty they encounter while looking for work. In prison, they imagine that it will be as easy to secure employment as it was before their arrest. Many do not take into account the current economic climate or the nation’s rising unemployment rate, and many overestimate their job search skills.

At the end of April, students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) returned to St. Louis to work with a number of community service agencies, including Project COPE. For at least 3 years, the Warhawks for Christ, a college ministry of the University Church, have been such a blessing to our organization and our partners!

My heart skipped a beat when I attempted to turn onto Marcus on Thursday, April 7th. Two police cars were blocking my entrance. When I looked down the street, I saw dozens of squad cars, police officers milling around, media helicopters, and caution tape around COPE’s property. I immediately thought about our partners, and I feared that someone had been murdered.

Today was the best St. Patrick’s Day ever! It all started early in the morning when I burst into the office and nearly knocked down a man who was leaving the building. I apologized and continued with my morning ritual of checking in with each staff member. When I entered Bea’s office, she told me that someone was in the process of making a donation. I introduced myself to the kind man whom I had previously plowed down and helped him bring in a truck full of new and beautiful household items. He and his wife donated bags of towels and hand cloths, pillows and mattress pads, comforters and blankets, and pots and pans.
